Have you ever wondered what different countries in the world have in common or how your country influences what you believe in and which values are important?
OECD Better in Life Index has been collected on a continuous basis since 2011. Over 80,000 users have responded from over 180 countries sharing their views on what makes a better life. The opinions on what they value most have been collected in an info-graphic and interactive map that shows the priorities in almost every country in the world and which well-being topics are rated the highest and where. The colors on the map indicate the highest-rated topic in that country and the size of the dot indicates the number of user responses. Just select a country to see the description of how users ranked the well-being topics from lowest to highest.
And it’s also possible to compare the average topic ranking in the selected country with that of users in another country!
You can see how developed countries such as Canada and the U.S.A. value life satisfaction and health most while South America, for example, value education as a top priority in life. In Europe, almost all the countries value life satisfaction and health as priorities and it’s interesting to see how people who live close to each other have the same priorities. Do you think there is a cultural reason or is it due to something else?
Some exceptions are indeed Monaco which puts safety as a priority along with other countries such as Japan and The United Arab Emirates. Romania considers education as the highest value, Slovenia considers the environment as the top priority and Moldova is the only one that considers jobs as the top value.
Another interesting exception is Australia, which is one of the few developed countries that considers work-life balance as its priority.
This is a small share of the world’s population and anyone can create his or her own index, so this may not statistically represent relevant samples. The responses are updated daily and have been sorted by country, age and gender. You can share your vision of the highest value for a better life by the end of 2015 and help OECD reach more than 100,000 users!
